Harris, Howard Kennedy


Cadet Howard Kennedy Harris
was born at Moneymore on 18th June 1898 to Robert Harris, Veterinary Surgeon and Elizabeth Harris nee Elder. They had married on 12th December 1894 at St. John's Church of Ireland, (Moneymore?).
In 1901 Harris (2) lived in house 6, Stonard Street, Moneymore, Co. Londonderry with his parents and 3 siblings; Robert William (5), George Arnold (4) and Rhoda Augusta (0). Family members of Howard's mother were also present; Sarah M Elder, Thomas Elder & William A Elder.
By 1911 Harris was living in house 16, High Street, Moneymore, Co. Londonderry with his parents, siblings and aunt Sarah M Elder. A servant was also living in the property, Mary Mitchell.
The 'Mid-Ulster Mail' of 30th January 1915 reported that Harris had been successful in the Belfast Banking Company entrance examination.

Harris joined the Belfast Banking Company in 1915. His Bankers Guarantee was signed by his father, Howard Harris and later by his sister Rhoda Augusta Winter of Hazelton, Moneymore.

Harris is recorded as working in Head Office.

Harris volunteered and enlisted into the Royal Air Force (RAF) on 21st October 1918 with Service Number 308743. His role is recorded as a Stores Clerk.

Following his demobilisation on 26th February 1919 he was transferred to the RAF 'G' Reserve.

Harris re-joined the bank and served eventually served in Kirkcubbin (old spelling for Kircubbin, Co. Down) as manager.

On 7th December 1920 Harris married Miss Elizabeth Carrothers Rutledge at St. Anne's Cathedral, Belfast. His address is recorded as Killinchy, Co. Down.

The 'Northern Whig' of 14th October 1947 reported on a charity collection in Killinchy.


Howard Harris retired in 1960. He died on 8th May 1988 and is buried in Agherton Cemetery, Portstewart, County Londonderry.
