Greenaway, Frederick James Redvers


Cadet Frederick James Redvers Greenaway
was born at Southwell Road, Bangor on 21st December 1899 to Frederick William Greenaway, Draper and Clara Elizabeth Greenaway nee Reid. 
In 1901 Frederick (1) lived in house 23, Southwell Street, Bangor with his parents and sister, Joyce Annie (2). Isabella Scott (12) was also boarding. Visitors that day were William, Eveline, Annie and Emily Dane.
In 1911 Frederick was living in house 34, Bawnmore Road, Belfast with his parents and sister, Joyce A.
On Ulster Day, 28th September 1912, a Clara Greenaway signed the Women's Declaration at the Good Templar Hall and gave her address as 12 Bayview Terrace, Bangor, Co. Down.
Frederick would have joined the Belfast Banking Company around 1917 and is recorded as working in Central branch. The Bankers Indemnity records an address at Florentine, South Parade, Belfast.

He volunteered and enlisted as an Officer Cadet with the Officer Training Corps (OTC). 
Frederick Greenaway died on 7th November 1960 with his estate going to his widow Eileen Delitia Greenaway. Redvers is detailed on his birth registration.

Gallway, Sydney Henry


Sydney Henry Gallway

was born at 12 Essex Street, Belfast on 27th May 1881 to William Henry Gallway, Clerk and Minnie Gallway nee O'Keife. He was registered as Henry Sydney Herbert Gallway.

In 1901 Sydney (18 - Registration says 1881) lived in house 21, Dufferin Avenue, Bangor, Co. Down with his parents and 2 siblings; Edith Mary (17 - Registration says 1882) and Robert M (16). His occupation is recorded as a Bank Clerk.
The 'County Down Spectator and Ulster Standard' of 17th March 1905 reports on a Sydney Gallway as being President of the Bangor Literary Club
Sydney volunteered and enlisted on 5th January 1916 into the Royal Flying Corps with Service Number 17293. His civilian occupation is described as an accountant.

The Forces War Records website records Sydney Galway (sp) as an Air Mechanic 3rd Class and Driver.
He served in France from 5th March 1917 and was discharged on 18th February 1919 to the RAF Class G Reserve. There is a note on the RAF record that he re-joined the RAF at Baldonnell until a final discharge on 30th April 1920.
Sydney was awarded the British War Medal and the British Victory Medal.
Following demobilisation, he re-joined the bank possibly working in Bangor branch (based on his address).

Sydney's father, William Henry Gallway of 15 Ranfurly Avenue, Bangor, retired linen merchant, died 18 January 1945. Probate Belfast 13 August to Henry Sydney Herbert Gallway retired bank official. Effects £2357 11s.
Henry Sydney Herbert Gallway of 15 Ranfurly Avenue, Bangor, retired bank official died on 21st March 1961 at Bangor Hospital with his estate going to Maureen Sheila Dornan (daughter?).

Foster, William Rigby (Junior)


Lieutenant William Rigby Foster Junior
was born in Nottingham, Nottinghamshire, England in 1898 to William Rigby Foster, Merchant and Clare Mary Foster nee Cowan. William was a twin to Robert C Foster.
The 'Nottinghamshire Guardian' of 17th September 1892 reported the marriage of William and Mary on 8th inst.. Williams grandfather, also William Rigby Foster died in December 1893.
In 1901 William (3) is living in 17 Burford Road, Nottingham with his parents and siblings; Marjorie (7) and Robert (3). Fanny Swift, a servant is also living in the property.
By 1910 the family had moved from England to the north of Ireland.

The 1911 census records William as living in house 18, Cherryvalley Park, Belfast with his parents and 2 siblings, Marjorie Sefton and Robert Cowan. A servant, Margaret Stewart is also living in the property.
William would have joined the Belfast Banking Company around 1915. His father signed the Bankers Guarantee and his address in the bank ledger is recorded as Ailsa, Holywood Road, Belfast.

William volunteered and enlisted into the 11th Bn. Royal Irish Rifles. The Northern Whig of 29th August 1916 records the promotion of William Rigby Foster to 2nd Lieutenant. He was later promoted to Lieutenant. His first theatre of war is recorded as France from 15th September 1916. His Medal Index card records his address as 237 Holywood Road, Belfast.

William was awarded the British War Medal and the British Victory Medal.
In 1918, the family attended Knock Presbyterian Church. William (as Rigby) and his brother Robert (as Roy) are commemorated on the Knock Presbyterian Church Roll of Honour. The Eddies Extract website records Rigby as wounded and Roy as twice wounded.

There is no record of whether William re-joined the bank. The LennonWylie website records a Wm Rigby Foster, civil servant living at 5 Waterloo Gardens, Belfast in 1943.
The 'Northern Whig' of 18th February 1946 records the death of Annie M Foster, wife of William R Foster, 212 Ballysillan Road, Belfast.
William's father, William Rigby Foster, retired sales manager died on 8th November 1954 at the Royal Victoria Hospital leaving his estate to William Rigby Foster, civil servant.

Cunningham, Wilfred James


Sergeant Wilfred James Cunningham
was born at Greencastle on 8th August 1896 to Nicholas Cunningham, Farmer and Margaret Cunningham nee Morgan. They had married in Greencastle on 11th November 1877.
1901 Irish Census - unable to trace a record.
In 1911 Wilfred (14) was living in house 2, Greencastle, Co. Down with his parents and 3 siblings; Nicholas J (26), Henry Leo (19) and Sarah Ann (17). A cousin, Mary Margaret Morgan (34) was also in the property.
Wilfred would have joined the Belfast Banking Company around 1914. His father signed the Bankers Guarantee.

Wilfred volunteered and enlisted into the Army Service Corps on 2nd October 1916 with Service Number DM2/224576.

On 4th October 1916 Wilfred signed up to be trained as a Motor Transport Driver.

He was awarded the British War Medal and the British Victory Medal. His Medal Index Card (above) has a note dated 1st September 1922 on it saying 'Nicholas Cunningham enquiring about medals lost to his son'.
